Aquatic invasive species educational resources

A GROWING PROBLEM: This activity is adaptable to various environments and can show students how the growth of an invasive species can affect the balance of native species in that ecosystem. The students actively participate in the game, simulating the spread of an invasive species, which is indeed becoming “A Growing Problem” across the globe.

AQUATIC INVADERS: a free choice learning initiative that provides a comprehensive tool kit package for educators to present an innovative, engaging and informative 20 minute program. The program illustrates a national message focused on the concept of invasive species as a threat to natural ecosystems, as well as the identification of distinct pathways (boating hitchhikers, water gardening releases, home and classroom aquaria releases, and live fishing bait releases) by which the general public may unknowingly introduce these species or encourage their spread. The kit contains props and background material for the presentation of the program (banner, signs, music CD, bookmarks, set up instructions, sample scripts, evaluations, species fact sheets, frequently asked questions, and a DVD of presentations). In addition, supplemental information and resources (species characteristics, images, education and leadership materials, glossary, impacts, prevention, monitoring and control) are provided as a professional development opportunity for the presenting educators and also to facilitate the expansion of aquatic invasive programs (e.g. teacher workshops, science camps, youth programs) to targeted audiences.

COASTAL INVADERS TRAVELING TRUNKS: a trunk designed to serve as activity based learning tools which are adaptable for elementary to high school students, and can be used in both formal and informal classroom settings. Educators will have all the necessary materials to make learning about coastal Georgia’s aquatic invasive species a fun and memorable experience for their students. Each trunk contains supplies and instructions for various activities, reference books and maps, preserved specimens, media and audio CDs, informative DVDs, as well as activities and materials associated with Aquatic Invaders tool kit. Trunks may be checked out for a period of one month and can be picked up in Savannah or Brunswick. Reservations are on a first come first serve basis, so call to reserve a trunk for your classroom soon!

GEORGIA AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES BOOKLET: This guide to non-native species in coastal Georgia has information about important habitats and native species, the impacts and pathways of invasive species, prevention tips, and background on current and potential problem species.

GEORGIA AQUATIC INVASIVE FACT SHEETS: These factsheets provide information about some of the current aquatic invasive species in coastal Georgia including habitat, origin, pathways, description and similar species, and interesting facts and potential impacts associated with their introduction.

GEORGIA PREVENTION RACK CARDS: These rack cards feature information about invasive species that are spread through the following pathways - aquarium releases, boating hitchhiking, live bait releases, and ornamental garden releases; and offer useful action steps that can be implemented to reduce the risks.

GEORGIA AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES VOLUNTEER MONITORING: This companion manual for the Coastal Georgia Adopt A Wetland program focus on monitoring macroinvertebrate fouling communities on plate samplers.

WEB RESOURCES: Online materials organizerd into the following categories: Book/Booklet, Brochure, CD-Rom, Costumed Characters, Curriculum, ID Card, Kit, Map, Photo, Poster, Screensaver, Video and Workshop

WETLAND INVASIVE INVASION: This classroom activity can be used as introduction to aquatic invasive species or as reinforcement of the topic. Students demonstrate ecological impacts of invasive species on wetland habitats using some simple materials that can be found around the house
